Learning Disabilities

We believe that people with Learning Disabilities, given the right support, can take responsibility and control of their lives. All efforts are made to facilitate independent living and to promote continuous education and personal development.
Service Users are comprehensively assessed prior to transition from home or a previous service. A Care/Support Plan is devised based on the assessment of needs and inputs from Service User, family, doctor, psychiatrist, physiotherapist, etc.
Service Users are supported and assisted to develop a Person Centred Plan that focuses on enabling each person to achieve their goals, i.e.: widening their social interactions, weight control, continuous education and hobbies, independent travelling, moving towards Independent / Supported living, etc.
All Service Users have an individual Hospital Passport and a Health Action Plan to promote and monitor a healthy life style. Risk Assessments are devised together with the Service User and continuously updated to ensure their safety.
To overcome communications barriers we use sign language, pictorial and widgit symbols. We make sure Service Users cultural and religious needs are met.

Autistic Spectrum Conditions – ASCs

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them. We support Service Users with ASCs by providing a structured and routine program through their Care/Support Plan and Person Centred Plan which involve realistic outcomes. People with autism may also experience over or under sensitivity to sounds, touch, tastes, smells, light or colours. Staff are supported to provide consistency in their approach and understand their behaviour.

Asperger Syndrome

People with Asperger Syndrome are often of average or above average abilities. They have fewer problems with speech but may still have difficulties with understanding and processing language. We support them to explore and fulfill their potential.

Dementia

People with a Learning Disability who already have a long life condition that impact on their learning, communicating and understanding skills are at a high risk of developing dementia. Dementia generally affects people with Learning Disabilities in similar ways to people without a learning disability, but there is a greater risk of developing dementia at a younger age. Therefore it is crucial for someone with a Learning Disability to be diagnosed at an early stage so that person can have the right support.
We believe a person with dementia still has dreams, likes and dislikes and things they are passionate about. With the right support it is possible for someone with dementia to get the very best out of life.

Mental Health / Challenging Behaviour

Many people with Learning Disabilities or Autism can also have a Mental Health issue or Behaviours that Challenge including Schizophrenia, Epilepsy, Bipolar Disorder and other related condition.
We involve other professionals, like Psychiatrist, Psychologist and a Behavioural Therapist for diagnostic, treatment and management.
Our Staff attend regular courses on Managing Challenging Behaviour and Safeguarding, provided by Croydon Care Support Team and our own in-house training accredited by BILD (British Institute of Learning Disabilities).
Comprehensive Risk Assessments are carried out and reviewed regularly. We use an ABC behavioural chart to build up a pattern of behaviours that challenge, plan strategies to work with the Service User towards minimizing that behaviour and to monitor their progress.
